What Can You Learn From A Deceptive Teacher? Sample But Not Population Statistics
نویسندگان
چکیده
The purpose of this study is to determine whether sampling procedure affected children’s inferences about populations or samples or both. In two experiments children learned to predict the color of a toy from its shape. In the first experiment a deceptive or honest teacher sampled the toys, while the second contrasted random and non-random sampling (using a magnetic wand to select from a population with only some magnetic toys). We found no difference between the inferences made about the population and the sample in the helpful or random condition. In the deceptive or nonrandom condition, children were less accurate/confident about inferences made about the population than the sample. This effect held only for the trained predictions (color given shape). We did not see this pattern for reverse inferences (shape given color). Children were more likely to generalize given helpful sampling, but seemed to focus more specifically on the trained relations.

W e need to invent a new word. A word with the same meaning but without the baggage. Few would argue with the principle that, as a medical discipline, we should examine current practice to see if it is effective, and constantly search for new treatments, therapies, and techniques. But mention research in sports medicine and see your friends and colleagues melt away. Let’s demystify this word: r...
متن کاملProbability in Statistics
As discussed in Chapter 1, most statistical studies seek to learn something about a population from a much smaller sample. Thus, a key question in any statistical study is whether it is valid to generalize from a sample to the population. To answer this question, we must understand the likelihood, or probability, that what we’ve learned about the sample also applies to the population. In this c...
متن کاملTo pool, or not to pool?
Let's start with the most familiar context for pooling data (at least to students in introductory courses in statistics), viz., the pooling of sample variances in a t test of the significance of the difference between two independent sample means. The null hypothesis to be tested is that the means of two populations are equal (the populations from which the respective samples have been randomly...
متن کاملThe Role of Preservice Teacher Education
I deas about teacher education are strongly influenced by a received wisdom about learning to teach. Most citizens in the United States who have thought much about teaching subscribe to the received wisdom, and most teachers subscribe to it as well. The most vocal and visible group not subscribing to the received wisdom is teacher educators. Here is why. According to received wisdom, teaching i...
